Evolving University Programs for the Other 95% of Engineers: A Capstone Marketplace

Abstract

The Capstone Marketplace (https://capstonemarketplace.org/) is a web-based service that connects undergraduate engineering teams with experts from the US Department of Defense and other government organizations to work on challenging design projects. It creates opportunities for student teams to structure their final design projects around real-world problems, interact directly with their “customers,” and work with their peers across disciplines. The Capstone Marketplace has to date supported student teams in tackling nearly 50 projects since its creation. This chapter details the Marketplace, how it works, and how to get involved with it. While the focus is on the Marketplace itself, the description of the processes followed, and artifacts created by student teams provide a useful guide on critical activities for anyone new to systems engineering.

The Systems Engineering Research Center (SERC) was established in the Fall of 2008 as a government-designated University Affiliated Research Center (UARC). The SERC has produced 15 years of research, focused on an updated systems engineering toolkit (methods, tools, and practices) for the complex cyber-physical systems of today and tomorrow.
